Athens, Greece (2009)

My journey

I went on this trip in 2009 with my parents. My father originally being from Greece, felt the need to bring each child to his homeland at least once before it was too late. So, in 2009 it was my turn to finally visit and finally meet extended family that I’ve only ever talk to through the phone and seen pictures of. Due to my father’s health, we mainly stayed in Athens as he needed a dialysis machine every 2 days or so. This trip was one of my first biggest trips and finally allowed to me to connect to a heritage that I was never fully aware of.

Recommened Attractions

The Acropolis
One of the most popular monuments in all Greece, and perhaps the world as well. The Acropolis was built between the ancient years of 447 and 438 BC. It symbolizes democracy and was built for Athena Parthenos, goddess of wisdom as well as the main goddess for the city of Athens. Today, the remains still stand at the top of a hill in athens and is actually an official UNESCO world heritage site.
The Plaka
Filled with small crowded streets, it is an extremely popular district that dates back to the early days of athens. Back then the athenians would drink in the taverns and the plaka would be known as the “sacred rock of the gods”. However, today it is an area of tourism as there are many monuments and museums located within the district as well as many tourist shops and restaurants.

Travelling Tips

When visiting Athens, beware of pick pockets because it is a common practice towards tourists. Also beware when purchasing goods, many greek vendors like to bargain, so when selling to tourists, they may raise the price more than its worth.
