China, Hong kong & Macau (2014)

My journey

China was also an organized over sea high school trip offered to me. This is the one I waited 5 years of high school to go on. I’ve always had an interest in Asian culture and it’s always been my dream to teach in the english language in Asia. We started off in Shanghai and travelled along the south coast until we got to Macau and Hong kong. There was many stops in smaller cities, smaller towns and even extremely rural farm towns. The only names I really remember between Shanghai and Hong Kong are Zhouzhuang and Guilin.

Recommened Attractions

Jing’an Temple (Shanghai)
The temple is made up of two buildings, The original temple was actually burned down in 1880, but fully reconstructed in 1972. It is filled with many figures of buddha along with other historical figures that represent Daoismin and religious rituals that can be performed by the visitors. The name of the temple in pinyin roughly translates to “tranquil and peaceful”.
Zhouzhuang Water Town
Zhouzhuang is small water town located near Suzhou. It dates back to 900 years and is entirely built upon water. Locals travel with through the town on gondolas. There are some walkable areas, but only in the center of the town and they are mostly the size of your average sidewalk. Many call Zhouzhuang “the chinese Venice”.

Travel Tips

When travelling in china, do not drink the tap water. It’s okay for brushing teeth and cleaning but is highly recommended to not consume it. Also beware of some street foods as they do not always sell what they advertise. Also know how to bargain because locals know when you’re a tourist and majority will rip you off if you do not know what you’re buying.
